DAVID 372

David372Carefully, I peeked around the corner, until, with one eye, I could see the beast. What a magnificent specimen! I'd watched it bathe, and now it was still within the confines of its watering hole, grooming itself. It had no idea of my location or intents, and so it preened. It regarded its reflection, making some very intimidating faces, no doubt practicing to frighten enemies, and then it smoothed back its luxurious mane calmly. Looking at it, I could understand how it always assumed the role of the alpha male so easily. All it had to do really was present itself. Its huge size scared off rivals, and wherever it walked, other males of the species made no challenge. I watched a few seconds more as it plunged its front paws into the watering hole and washed them.

Then it turned towards its den. Unbeknownst to it, I had crept in while it was bathing and had wrapped its nest in black satin sheets. If my theory proved correct, it would render the beast defenseless, and then I could safely subdue it. If I was wrong, it would devour me. But I had to take the chance. It was the most spectacular specimen anyone had ever seen. It was thought to be impervious to capture. My heart beat wildly just knowing that I was the only person to ever come this close to it. That alone was crazy. But now I dared to think that I could capture it too. Suddenly it emerged from the watering hole and strode into its den and confronted its nest. It stopped. I took a deep breath, took aim, and then I POUNCED!

I grabbed it around its thick, massively muscular neck, keeping my arms under its square jaw and safe from its fangs. My trajectory was perfect. We both went crashing onto the nest. One massive paw swept back and knocked me off its back. In that split second, it twisted around to face me. It's eyes were brilliant...bewitching, and I knew that if I stopped for a second to gaze at them I would be lost, so I launched myself upon the front of the beast and pinned its paws down beside it.

"HA! Gotcha!" I yelled. It bared its fangs. It struggled. But its mighty muscles were no match for my superior intellect. It kicked with its hind paws, struggling to get a hold of something firm and thereby gain the leverage to throw me off. But my experiment worked like a charm. It could find no traction on the silky sheets. It was furious. Its whole body shook and it showed its teeth. "Now to subdue you! And then tame you!" It held its mouth open, ready to strike. But now it was time to test the second part of my plan. It would have been no good to trap it and not have a way of retreating safely. But I was in a perfect position to test my theory. I was straddling its torso with its mighty chest spread out before me. Carefully I released one of its paws and with my free hand I stroked its chest. Instantly, the snarling ceased. Its eyes closed and it began to purr.

I had subdued the beast.
