It's funny how things work out.
When I was a little kid, one of my favorite superheroes was one you probably aren't familiar with. Magnus, Robot Fighter, was the future's version of Tarzan. Raised by robots, but living among his fellow humans, he uses his great strength to battle alien menaces and rogue robots.
I was fascinated by him. As usual, I was enthralled with his handsome good looks. Even at that age, I wondered about the comic book artists...what's it like to make an image of a big, handsome man whenever you wanted?
And a sexy man at that. Magnus wore a kind of very, very short tunic with high, capped sleeves, and these large cutouts that let you have you a peek at his pecs and buffed torso. For the longest time I've been wanting to portray David as Magnus and this year's contest was the perfect opportunity.
I finished the image yesterday and then went to visit my dad. He had several boxes on the floor filled with stuff from the attic that he wanted me to sort through before he got rid of them. I was surprised to find a lot of my brother's stuff from childhood: KISS calendars, Spiderman comics, Six Million Dollar Man coloring books...But there, at the very bottom of the box were two of my Magnus comics. I hadn't seen them for 41 years, yet they returned the day I turned David into the futuristic robot hunter.
