When I was lad, the style for men was to wear the top three buttons of casual shirts unbuttoned. I loooooved it! I think it was the male equivalent of the low cut dress. It was full permmission to check out a guy to see if he had a hairy chest. Another style item, at least for a while, was to wear some kind of medalliion (or later a gold chain). That was practically an invitation to look down a guy's shirt. I remember people used to make fun of the style, and they had reason to because some men overdid it with their shirts unbuttoned to their navel and half a dozen gold chains draped across a wimpy chest. But I couldn't wait to be old enough to wear my shirts half unbuttoned.
