Who here had a crush on the coach? There were three gym teachers/coaches in my high school. One of them, Mr. Beckenhauer, was the football coach. He was built more like a bodybuilder than a linebacker, and to top it off, he had the roughly handsome face of a movie star. Even with clothes on he looked muscular. Even the other teachers acknowledged his build. I remember my English teacher describing an incident that involved a powerfully built man: "This guy was built like Lonnie Beckenhauer!" How I dreamt of catching him shirtless in the locker room. Alas, he wasn't even my teacher, so I had to be content to admire him from afar.
And then during the last week of school, I heard one of the teachers talking with someone about dedication. They used Mr. Beckenhauer as an example.
"You know, at lunchtime, when the pool's not in use, he goes up there and swims laps. Every day."
Probably in a speedo. Oh the unfairness of it all.
